📘 What is Konjunktiv II in German?

Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II) is used in German grammar to express wishes, unreal situations, polite requests, or imaginary conditions — things that are not real but possible.

In English, we use words like would, could, should, might to express the same ideas.

⚙️ How to Form Konjunktiv II

There are two main ways to form Konjunktiv II in German:

🧠 1️⃣ Simple Form – Using the Past Stem (Präteritum)

🔍 (What is Präteritum Stem-:For example infinitve form is machen and past form of machen is machte, so we remove ending from machte then stem would be mach-)  

For irregular (strong) verbs, take the Präteritum stem and add an umlaut (ä, ö, ü) if possible, plus Konjunktiv endings:

💬 2️⃣ würde + Infinitive Form

For regular verbs (and many strong verbs in spoken German), we use würde + infinitive.
This is easier and more common.

👉 Formula:
würde + infinitive (at the end)

  • Ich würde Deutsch lernen. → I would learn German.

  • Er würde dir helfen. → He would help you.
