Counting in German (Zahlen auf Deutsch)

Learning how to count in German is one of the first steps in mastering the language. Numbers are called “Zahlen” in German.

🧩 Tens (20–100)

30   dreißig

🧠 How to Form Numbers Above 20

In German, numbers are formed backwards from 21 to 99 — you say the ones first, then “und” (and), then the tens.

➡️ Example:

  • 21 = einundzwanzig (one and twenty)

  • 32 = zweiunddreißig (two and thirty)

  • 45 = fünfundvierzig (five and forty)

👉 Pattern:
[Ones] + und + [Tens]

💯 Hundreds and Thousands

Number German                    Example
100      (ein)hundert                   101 = einhunderteins
200       zweihundert                   200 = zweihundert
300       dreihundert                   345 = dreihundertfünfundvierzig
            1,000       (ein)tausend                  1001= eintausendeins
2,000        zweitausend                  2025 = zweitausendfünfundzwanzig

🗣️ Useful Tips for Beginners

  1. Always write numbers together in German (no spaces or hyphens).
    👉 Example: vierundzwanzig (24)

  2. “eins” becomes “ein” before another word.
    👉 Example: einundzwanzig, not einsundzwanzig.

  3. Practice counting objects daily: ein Apfel, zwei Äpfel, drei Äpfel...
